p.1 #5 · p.1 #5 · Does anyone use a Canon 5d Mark IV for sports? The 5DIV is a better choice over the 1Dx unless you really need the fps and durability. The 5D4, DR, AF and AF accuracy along with much better low light AF acquisition are all superior to the 1Dx. AWB is much better as well, particularly indoors.
If you are trying to photograph a sport with a smaller field of action (like basketball or hockey) you can most likely use a moderate zoom lens like the 70-200mm. Investing in a faster, f/2.8 version of the 70–200 really opens up possibilities for indoor sports, or night shooting when you can get close.

Shoot only manual indoors. Unless you are in a newer, pro arena, you will be at ISO 1600 or 3200, at F/1.8 to F/2.8 and 1/320 to 1/1000. In most college arenas I shoot in, I am at ISO 1600, at F/2 at 1/4000 to 1/500. Overall the Canon EOS 5D Mark III achieves very low levels of measured noise across the ISO range but this is paid for with a loss of fine detail at higher sensitivities. The two extended settings, ISO 51200 and 102400 should be reserved for emergency situations only, but up to ISO 25600 the camera's JPEGs are usable at least at smaller output BPyAMr.
